Messiah, by George Frideric Handel, is a biblical overview of salvation history. As perhaps the most widely-known musical work in the classical repertoire, it is unique in that the entire oratorio consists of quotations from Scripture, designed to do nothing less than tell the story of the world’s redemption through Jesus the Messiah. Its vast panorama begins with the hope-filled voices of the prophets promising salvation and ends at the doorway of heaven as a chorus of angels celebrates Christ’s accomplishment. Because the words of Messiah are also God’s living word, this study will enhance our understanding of God’s saving plan and move us to receive God’s grace.
